England have only given New Zealand 12 extras in this game while New Zealand have given England 43 at the moment - that is quite a lot of mistakes.

That was all encapsulated by the non-dismissal of Ben Stokes.

  3. 'Brendon was saying treat it like a one-day innings'

England bowler Stuart Broad, speaking to the BBC: "Stokesy played a really good knock and if he was still in,it would be close to game over but it was great bowling from Jamieson.

"The last hour from Rooty and Foakesy was really calm andjust what we needed to chase the runs.

"Brendon was saying treat it like a one-day innings, havethat positive mindset, the pitch is not conducive to great stroke play butStokes put pressure on. They have world class bowlers, we are not there just tosurvive and we have to find a way to do that.

"Root has been so reliable for years and he calms the dressingroom down, he has such a calm nature and holds the key tomorrow, and they willbe desperate to get him out.

"I love batting at Lords, you get great value for your runsand there will be some excitement around."

It has been a compelling game and it is building.

We should keep in mind the first innings efforts of both teams just as a thought.

Neither side has been able to find anyone in the resources when the ball has stopped nipping around. Both teams have almost looked fatigued.

Alex Lees' 20 today was positive. I know it's only 20 and it's no a big number but I would say if you keep playing like that with that mindset and positivity but with that natural technique I think he could get quite a few runs.

Ollie Pope got a jaffa today. At the moment I don't think he's a number three. That's not to say that he can't be a three in the future. I don't see him looking like he's enjoying batting - it looks quite serious. Joe Root looks like he's got an inner zen but Pope doesn't look like he can play a balanced forward defence.

  6. 'Game on, innit?'

England bowler Stuart Broad speaking to TMS: "It was really enjoyable, great to get the crowd going. Weknew that new ball had to count, if they got past 300-320 it was a taller ask.

"Things went our way, we had to execute our chance and as abowling group we should be very proud.

    "It’s game on, innit?"

  7. 'Test team has to become more streetwise'

Root gets England to 216-5 at close in chase of 277 - clips, radio & text (8)

    Michael Vaughan

Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

There is a lot of talent in the England changing room that could be playing better but a lot of is thinking.

I looked at the Jonny Bairstow dismissal - he knew it was going to be Kyle's Jamieson's last over - you've got to get together as a pair and just say 'let's see him off'. The spunner might come or Tim Southee might have come on and give you a couple of looseners.

If you look at the Test team they have a huge amount of talent, just like the ODI side but that side is streetwise. They are winners. This Test team offer teams an easy win, an easy wicket or an easy moment. They've got to be more streetwise and better than that.

It was the partnership between Ben Stokes and Joe Root that has kept England in this game and, possibly, made them slim favourites.

They put on 90 with Stokes particularly aggressive. He had his moment of fortune, however. He should have been out for one when he was bowled off a Colin de Grandhomme no-ball.

  9. Win would be 'massive' for England

Root gets England to 216-5 at close in chase of 277 - clips, radio & text (13)

    Michael Vaughan

Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

It's all on Joe Root. It could be an amazing day with him getting a century, passing 10,000 Test runs at the exact same age as Alastair Cook and England to get a win.

It's always hard to win when you've only won one game in 17. It would be massive for them to win - it would send a huge amount of positivity having arrived with not much of a chance on day three.

You don't see many sides chasing a total like this in the UK. It would show that England have some character and for Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes to get a win would be huge.

We haven't learnt a great deal this week, though. We know that the batting unit struggle when the ball is moving around and we rely on Root and Stokes.

We have seen a lot of indifference, particularly with the bat in hand but it has been very entertaining.

Once you get past the 30-over mark it has been easier to bat.

New Zealand got ahead of the game yesterday but England blew them away with a huge amount of character and skill this morning.

England have shown great character. They looked vulnerable and it looked tricky with the bat when Jonny Bairstow got out, I thought that was it.

"It's game on, isn't it?" says Stuart Broad with a cheeky smile on his face.

When Alex Lees, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope and then Jonny Bairstow fell I must be honest I did not think we'd be saying that.

England were 69-4, still 208 runs away from victory.

    Andy Zaltzman

There will be 15 overs until the new ball tomorrow. If they score at four an over, they'll need one run to win when it is taken!

  16. Post update

Overall England have had about as good a day as their fans could have hoped for.

Stuart Broad started it all off in the morning session in that over where England took a 'team hat-trick'.
